It is with deep sorrow that we receive the news of the passing of beloved actress Loretta Swit. She died peacefully of natural causes in the early morning hours of Friday, May 30th, at her home in New York City, at the age of 87. Her publicist, Harlan Boll, confirmed the news to PEOPLE.
Television has lost one of its brightest lights. Loretta Swit will forever be etched in our memory as the unforgettable Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, the dedicated head nurse from the cherished series M\A\*S\*H*, which captivated the world from 1972 to 1983. It was this very special role that earned her two Emmy Awards and the enduring affection of her audience, cementing her place in entertainment history.
Her artistic journey was vast and vibrant. Beyond her landmark role in M\A\*S\*H*, Loretta lent her unique talent to numerous classic series such as Hawaii Five-O, Mission: Impossible, and The Love Boat, as well as films and TV movies. Her final appearance was in the film Play the Flute (2019), and she still had projects on the horizon, like Second Chances, currently in pre-production.
Loretta nurtured a genuine passion for the arts. In a 1979 PEOPLE cover story, she fondly recalled her beginnings: "I always wanted to be an actress. My mother loved movies and we would go to double features, watching both films twice." She overcame the shyness of a "fat little kid with braces" to shine on Broadway – where she debuted in Same Time, Next Year (1975) and received the prestigious Sarah Siddons Award in 1991 – and earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989.
Her life was marked by intense dedication. "I love my work and I love my friends. I can’t imagine having a happier life," she once declared, reflecting her joy and gratitude. Beyond screens and stages, Loretta was a talented watercolorist and a fierce advocate for animal rights. Her book, Switheart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit (2017), continues to raise funds for charities fighting animal cruelty, a lasting testament to her generous spirit.
