The U.S. men’s hockey team had to battle for it, but secured a spot in the semifinals with a 2–1 overtime victory over Sweden.

Team USA led 1–0 for most of the game before Sweden equalized with just 1:31 remaining in the third period. Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes then scored the game-winner 3:27 into overtime. The Americans will face Slovakia in Friday’s semifinal. Canada also advanced in overtime, defeating Czechia 4–3, and will meet Finland in the other semifinal.

On the slopes, Mikaela Shiffrin captured gold in what is expected to be her final appearance at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The most decorated Alpine skier in history dominated the slalom event, finishing 1.50 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The victory marked a meaningful comeback for Shiffrin, who had gone eight Olympic races without a medal and dealt with post-traumatic stress following a frightening crash in 2024.

Off the field, there was also a memorable personal moment for Team USA. Women’s hockey star Hilary Knight proposed to her girlfriend, speedskater Brittany Bowe — and she said yes. The couple grew close during the 2022 Beijing Olympics, often taking evening walks together to relieve competition stress.

Knight will now lead the U.S. women’s hockey team into the gold medal game against Canada on Thursday, while Bowe, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist, finished fourth this year in both the 1,000 meters and the team pursuit.
