Kaylee Hottle, Star of Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong, Dies at 18
Kaylee Hottle, the young Deaf actress best known for portraying Jia in the recent Godzilla films, has died at the age of 18 following a car crash in Maryland.
The tragic news was first reported by TMZ on Tuesday, July 21. Kaylee's father, Joshua Hottle, later confirmed that his daughter died after being involved in a serious traffic accident earlier that day.
In a heartfelt video shared on Facebook using American Sign Language (ASL), Joshua expressed his grief as he prepared to travel from Texas to Maryland to bring his daughter's body home. Alongside the video, he wrote that he was taking "a flight that I never wanted to take."
According to Joshua, Kaylee suffered critical injuries in the crash and passed away while being transported to a hospital.
Kaylee came from a family deeply connected to the Deaf community. She, her parents, and several generations of relatives were Deaf, and she attended the Texas School for the Deaf, which honored her memory in a statement released after her passing.
The school described Kaylee's death as a heartbreaking loss and extended condolences to her family, friends, classmates, and everyone whose lives she touched. Administrators also asked the public to respect the family's privacy and avoid speculation while authorities continue to gather information about the accident.
Kaylee's acting career began after appearing in a 2017 commercial promoting the ASL communication app Convo. Casting directors later noticed her performance and selected her to play Jia, the orphaned girl who develops a unique bond with King Kong through sign language.
She made her film debut in 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Eiza González. Kaylee returned to the role in 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, where Jia remained one of the emotional centers of the story.
In addition to the blockbuster franchise, Kaylee appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. and earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Younger Performer in a Film for her performance in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Her work also earned the admiration of her co-stars. During promotional interviews for Godzilla vs. Kong, Alexander Skarsgård praised Kaylee's professionalism, saying he was impressed by how naturally she performed despite it being her first feature film. He also revealed that working with her inspired him to learn American Sign Language while on set.
Kaylee Hottle's performances helped bring greater visibility to Deaf actors in mainstream Hollywood productions, and her portrayal of Jia resonated with audiences around the world. Her untimely passing marks the loss of a promising young talent whose impact extended well beyond the screen.
