Top-ranked Ohio State delivered a dominant performance to open its season, crushing Ball State 56-3 on Saturday in Columbus while sending a clear message ahead of next week's blockbuster showdown against No. 5 Texas.

After a sluggish opening drive ended in a three-and-out, the Buckeyes quickly found their rhythm, scoring touchdowns on eight of their next 11 possessions and overwhelming the Cardinals on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Julian Sayin looked every bit the leader Ohio State hoped for, completing 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns before leaving midway through the third quarter. He also added the first rushing touchdown of his college career, diving into the end zone on a fourth-and-goal play to extend the Buckeyes' early lead.

Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith stole the spotlight with a spectacular first-half performance, hauling in eight receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns. His breathtaking one-handed, over-the-shoulder 48-yard catch ignited the Ohio State offense, while his second score just before halftime gave the Buckeyes complete control of the game.

"It was a fun game, but we know there's still plenty to improve," Sayin said. "We'll study the film, correct our mistakes and get ready because next week's challenge is huge."

Ohio State's running game exploded after halftime. After being held to just 35 rushing yards in the first two quarters, the Buckeyes erupted for 202 rushing yards in the second half, highlighted by electrifying touchdown runs from Bo Jackson (65 yards) and Ja'Kobi Jackson (49 yards).

Bo Jackson finished with 83 rushing yards on nine carries, while Ja'Kobi Jackson matched that total on just eight attempts.

"We knew a big play was coming," Ja'Kobi Jackson said. "Everyone stayed patient, kept doing their job, and eventually we broke through."

Ball State's only points came on a 54-yard field goal by Brody Boehm late in the second quarter. Quarterback Keldric Luster, making his first collegiate start, completed 18 of 33 passes for 89 yards as the Cardinals struggled against one of the nation's top defenses.

Ohio State's defense was equally dominant, limiting Ball State to just 165 total yards while controlling the game from start to finish.

Following the victory, head coach Ryan Day made it clear that the celebration would be short-lived, with all attention immediately shifting to next week's highly anticipated road test against Texas.

"We'll enjoy this for about 15 minutes," Day said. "As soon as we leave this locker room, our focus is on Texas."

The afternoon also featured an emotional tribute as former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, who guided the Buckeyes to the 2002 national championship, was inducted into Ohio Stadium's Ring of Honor alongside legendary coaches Woody Hayes and Paul Brown. Surrounded by former players, Tressel called the recognition one of the greatest honors of his career.
