John Harbaugh steps down as Ravens head coach after missing the playoffs

The Baltimore Ravens dismissed John Harbaugh on Tuesday, bringing an end to the tenure of the most accomplished head coach in franchise history.
The move came just two days after Baltimore was eliminated from playoff contention with a 26–24 loss to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, missing a last-second field-goal attempt that would have extended their season. Harbaugh had signed a three-year extension last offseason and was under contract through 2028.
In a statement, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti described the decision as “incredibly difficult,” praising Harbaugh for delivering a Super Bowl championship and providing years of stability and leadership.
“John has earned what I truly believe is a Hall of Fame résumé,” Bisciotti said. “He and his family have deeply connected with this city, and we are forever grateful for his contributions on and off the field.”
Harbaugh, 64, leaves Baltimore with 193 career wins — 12th-most in NFL history — and a Super Bowl title from the 2012 season. His 18-year tenure was the second-longest among active head coaches, behind only Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin.
Harbaugh expressed deep gratitude to the organization and city, saying he was thankful for the opportunity to build a winning program in Baltimore.
Despite regular-season success, recent playoff struggles weighed heavily. In eight seasons with MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Ravens won only three postseason games and never reached the Super Bowl. Baltimore finished this season 8–9 — only the third losing record of Harbaugh’s tenure — despite entering the year as a championship favorite.
Fan frustration mounted throughout the season as the Ravens posted the worst home record in franchise history (3–6) and suffered several late-game collapses. Criticism intensified after a December loss to New England in which Derrick Henry did not receive a carry in the final 12 minutes despite Baltimore leading by double digits.
Harbaugh now becomes one of the most sought-after candidates on the coaching market if he chooses to return to the sideline in 2026. Within 45 minutes of the news breaking, his agent reported receiving interest from seven NFL teams.
Harbaugh departs as the longest-tenured coach in Baltimore sports history and one of only eight NFL head coaches to coach 300 games with the same franchise. He compiled a 193–124 record (.609), won six AFC North titles, earned two No. 1 seeds, and reached four AFC Championship Games.
The Ravens — known for rare coaching stability since relocating in 1996 — will now begin the search for just the fourth head coach in franchise history. Bisciotti said the organization’s goal remains unchanged:
“To win championships — and to ensure this franchise continues to represent excellence for our fans and our city.”
