(NYSE: WMT) announced today that its Board of Directors has elected John Furner, 51, to become President and Chief Executive Officer of Walmart Inc., effective February 1, 2026. Furner has also been appointed to the Board of Directors. Doug McMillon, 59, will retire on January 31, 2026, remain on the Board until the next annual meeting, and support the leadership transition.

Greg Penner, Chairman of Walmart Inc., praised the decision:
“John Furner is the right leader to guide Walmart into its next era of growth and transformation. Having started as an hourly associate and served in numerous leadership roles across all three business segments, John understands every part of our company. His leadership of Walmart U.S., marked by digital acceleration and strong associate engagement, has positioned us for continued success.”

Penner also expressed gratitude to Doug McMillon:
“Doug’s decade-long leadership transformed Walmart. His investments in talent, digital innovation, and supply chain modernization strengthened our business and fueled long-term growth. Walmart is more innovative, resilient, and aligned with our mission thanks to Doug’s extraordinary leadership.”

McMillon reflected on his tenure:
“Serving as Walmart’s CEO has been the honor of a lifetime. I’m grateful to our associates, the Board, and the Walton family for their trust. John’s deep passion for our people, strong digital instincts, and commitment to our culture make him the ideal leader for this next AI-driven chapter. I’m confident Walmart’s future is bright under his leadership.”

Furner expressed appreciation for the opportunity:
“I’m deeply honored by the trust placed in me. Walmart has shaped my life, and I’m grateful for Doug’s mentorship and legacy. As we enter a new retail era powered by innovation and AI, our people and our purpose will lead the way. Together, we’ll continue serving customers, supporting associates, and strengthening communities.”

Furner has served as President and CEO of Walmart U.S. since 2019, overseeing more than 4,600 stores. He joined Walmart as an hourly employee in 1993 and has held a wide range of roles across merchandising, operations, sourcing, and global markets.
