Jannik Sinner Defends Wimbledon Title With Victory Over Alexander Zverev
LONDON — Jannik Sinner continues to cement his place among tennis' elite after successfully defending his Wimbledon crown, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday's men's singles final at the All England Club.
The world No. 1 captured his fifth Grand Slam title and second consecutive Wimbledon championship, completing an impressive comeback from the disappointment he suffered at the French Open, where he squandered a two-set lead in the second round.
As Sinner fired a forehand winner down the line on championship point, the Italian collapsed onto the grass in celebration, soaking in another unforgettable triumph on Centre Court.
"There is no better place to play tennis," Sinner said during the trophy presentation.
Another Historic Milestone
At just 24 years old, Sinner became one of only five men in the Open Era to successfully defend titles at different Grand Slam tournaments before turning 25. Sunday's victory also marked his 100th career win in Grand Slam competition, another milestone in his rapidly growing résumé.
One year earlier, Sinner had also bounced back from heartbreak at Roland Garros—where he failed to convert three championship points against Carlos Alcaraz—to lift the Wimbledon trophy. This season, history repeated itself as he again responded to Paris disappointment with victory in London.
Zverev Battles Through Injury
The final was evenly contested through the opening two sets, with Zverev taking the first-set tiebreak before Sinner answered by dominating the second-set breaker.
The turning point came midway through the third set. At 3-3, Zverev slipped while chasing a drop shot and appeared to hyperextend his right knee. Sinner immediately crossed the net to help his opponent back to his feet in a display of sportsmanship.
Although Zverev chose to continue playing, the injury appeared to affect his movement. Moments later, he surrendered the first service break of the match, allowing Sinner to seize control before serving out the third set.
Sinner Raises His Level
As the match progressed, Sinner became increasingly effective returning Zverev's powerful serve while maintaining remarkable consistency from the baseline.
The statistics reflected the difference between the two finalists. Sinner finished with 58 winners and just 25 unforced errors, compared to 49 winners and 45 unforced errors for Zverev. Although the German led the ace count 17-15 and regularly exceeded 139 mph (224 km/h) on serve, Sinner's precision and court coverage ultimately proved decisive.
"He showed once again why he's the best player in the world," Zverev said after the match.
A Remarkable Response
Sinner's Wimbledon triumph comes just weeks after one of the most disappointing defeats of his career at Roland Garros. Following that loss, he underwent medical evaluations in Milan before returning to competition in London.
His Wimbledon campaign did not begin easily. The Italian survived a grueling five-set comeback victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in the opening round before steadily raising his level throughout the tournament. After the first round, he dropped only one set—the opening set of the final—and produced a dominant semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic.
Zverev Continues to Progress
Despite falling short in the championship match, Zverev leaves Wimbledon with one of the strongest performances of his career at the All England Club, surpassing his previous best result of reaching the fourth round.
The German, who recently captured his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, admitted he now genuinely believes a Wimbledon title is within reach.
"I'm 29 years old, and this is the first time I truly believe I can win this trophy," Zverev said.
Even with the runner-up finish, Zverev will move up to World No. 2 in the ATP Rankings, overtaking Carlos Alcaraz, who missed both Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year because of a wrist injury.
For Sinner, however, Wimbledon once again confirmed his status as the player to beat, adding another prestigious championship to an already remarkable career that continues to reach new heights.
