ICE Agent Jonathan Ross at Center of Minneapolis Shooting Investigation as Federal Response Expands

The federal immigration agent involved in the fatal Minneapolis incident has now been identified, as President Donald Trump moves decisively to reinforce federal law enforcement amid escalating unrest in the city.

The agent, identified by local media as Jonathan Ross, 43, was captured on video during a confrontation that resulted in the death of Renee Nicole Good. Public records indicate Ross previously lived near Fort Bliss, a major U.S. Army installation in New Mexico, and has extensive experience in federal enforcement operations.

Court documents from an unrelated case show Ross was previously injured in the line of duty after being dragged by a vehicle during the arrest of an undocumented suspect — a detail federal officials point to as critical context in assessing the Minneapolis shooting.

As tensions rose following the incident, The New York Times reported that the Trump administration authorized the deployment of 100 additional Customs and Border Protection agents to Minnesota, signaling a firm federal response to unrest and ongoing threats against immigration officers.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking at the White House, made clear the administration’s position: federal officers will be supported, and intimidation or violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated.

“No one wants to see an American lose their life. Any loss of life is tragic,” Vance said. “But what happened here must be understood clearly. This officer was carrying out a lawful operation and acted in self-defense after facing a potentially deadly threat.”

Vance warned that political rhetoric from the far left has contributed to an increasingly hostile environment for law enforcement officers nationwide. “We are seeing organized efforts to obstruct, harass, and endanger federal agents. This administration will not give in to intimidation or what amounts to political terrorism,” he said.

Video footage released publicly shows masked federal officers approaching Good’s vehicle during an active enforcement operation. As officers ordered her to exit the car, the vehicle reversed briefly and then surged forward. An agent positioned in front of the vehicle discharged his weapon while stepping back, firing as the car advanced.

Federal authorities emphasized that the vehicle was used as a weapon, a scenario law enforcement officers are trained to respond to immediately due to the lethal risk involved.

Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Good, 37, was pronounced dead. President Trump and senior administration officials have consistently defended the agent’s actions as lawful and necessary under the circumstances.

“I’ve rarely seen an incident so widely mischaracterized,” Vance told reporters. “This was interference in a legitimate law enforcement operation. The officer believed his life was in danger, and the facts support that conclusion.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem echoed those remarks, stating that the incident reflects a broader pattern of escalating threats against federal officers. “Vehicles have been used as weapons against law enforcement nearly 100 times in recent years. This must be called what it is — a violent act,” she said.

Despite federal explanations, Democratic state and city officials in Minnesota criticized the enforcement surge, blaming it for unrest. Protests erupted near a federal facility in Minneapolis, where demonstrators hurled insults at officers and attempted to breach secured areas. Federal agents used crowd-control measures, including pepper spray and tear gas, to restore order.

More than 2,000 ICE officers have been deployed to Minneapolis and St. Paul in recent days as part of operations tied to large-scale fraud investigations involving federal benefit programs. Secretary Noem confirmed that “hundreds and hundreds” of arrests have already been made.

The incident occurred less than a mile from the site of George Floyd’s death in 2020 — a location that has since become a focal point for anti-law enforcement activism.

Good, who had moved to Minnesota last year, was described by family members as a devoted mother. Federal officials expressed sympathy for her family while stressing that personal tragedy does not negate the seriousness of threatening an officer’s life.

Minnesota officials accused the Trump administration of limiting state involvement in the investigation. However, Noem clarified that jurisdiction rests with federal authorities. “This is a federal officer, involved in a federal operation. The investigation is proceeding appropriately,” she said.

Ross, a veteran ICE officer with more than a decade of service, remains on administrative leave as standard procedure while the investigation continues.

“He followed his training and acted to protect his life and the lives of others,” Noem stated. “This administration will always stand with law enforcement officers who put themselves in harm’s way to uphold the law.”
