LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) — “This is one of the most electric and highly anticipated places we’ve been all year,” said ESPN College GameDay host Rece Davis, as excitement builds for what could be Texas Tech’s biggest football matchup in nearly two decades.

The showdown between the No. 7 BYU Cougars and the No. 8 Texas Tech Red Raiders has captured national attention, including that of ESPN analyst and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard.

“I’m thrilled we’re here for this matchup,” Howard said. “The Red Raiders have absolutely earned this level of attention.”

Saturday’s clash marks the first top-10 Big 12 conference game since 2022 — and Davis believes defense could be the deciding factor for Texas Tech.

“As the saying goes, defense travels,” Davis noted. “With guys like Jacob Rodriguez making plays all over the field, if you’re not protecting that ball, he’s going to take it away.”

Still, BYU isn’t backing down. The Cougars bring their trademark toughness to Jones AT&T Stadium, ready to match the Red Raiders hit for hit.

“BYU plays a physical brand of football,” Howard said. “And they’re starting freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier — one of the coolest names in college football.”

Davis agreed, adding, “When you play BYU, you know you’re going to get hit.”

Beyond the football field, College GameDay continues to highlight what makes college football special — the sense of community and excitement that unite fans nationwide. Raiderville proved exactly that, drawing crowds early in the week to celebrate the moment.

“That’s what makes this sport so great,” Davis said. “Fans started lining up days in advance — the energy here is incredible.”

With major playoff implications on the line, all eyes will be on Lubbock this weekend. ESPN expects a charged atmosphere unlike any other.

“There’s something truly special about being here,” Davis concluded. “If it takes another 17 years to come back, I hope we find this same energy again — because this has been amazing.”
