How to Save Money on Summer Grilling as Beef Prices Hit Record Highs

This summer’s grilling season is becoming more expensive for families across the country as beef prices continue climbing to record highs.
At many grocery stores and butcher shops, premium cuts like ribeye steak are now selling for more than $20 per pound, while ground beef for burgers can cost $6 or more per pound — especially for leaner options. The rising prices are forcing many consumers to rethink their barbecue plans heading into Memorial Day and the busy summer cookout season.
Still, many grill lovers say they are determined to keep their traditions alive despite inflation and higher grocery bills.
“The food is expensive right now, but we make it work,” said Sam Moore, owner of J&W Barbecue.
According to industry data, beef prices have increased nearly 15% compared to a year ago, putting pressure on families trying to host affordable gatherings. But butchers and budgeting experts say there are still ways to enjoy summer grilling without overspending.
At Luken Meats, owner Neil Luken said pork ribs remain one of the best options for feeding larger groups at a lower cost.
“If you cut ribs properly between every bone, you can stretch portions further and serve more people,” Luken explained.
Chicken has also become one of the most affordable protein choices this grilling season. Luken noted that chicken breasts and wings can provide full meals for less than five dollars per person, making them a popular alternative to beef.
Savings experts are also encouraging shoppers to rethink how they plan meals. Kristin McGrath of The Krazy Coupon Lady recommends building cookout menus around weekly grocery sales instead of shopping for specific recipes first.
“If you shop based on what’s discounted, you’ll save significantly more money,” McGrath said.
She also suggested purchasing larger items like whole chickens, which can cost roughly 20% less than pre-cut or boneless options. Consumers can then use different portions for multiple meals, including kebabs, tacos, sandwiches, or salads.
Another growing trend among budget-conscious shoppers is swapping beef for less expensive proteins such as ground turkey or ground pork. According to McGrath, those alternatives currently cost about 30% less than ground beef in many areas.
Some families are also stretching burger meat further by mixing ground beef with vegetables, breadcrumbs, or other fillers to reduce costs while maintaining portion sizes.
Despite the rising prices, many shoppers say they are unwilling to let inflation ruin important summer traditions.
“Just because prices are high doesn’t mean we won’t enjoy the holiday,” one shopper said while preparing for Memorial Day weekend.
Experts say careful planning, smart shopping, and flexible menu choices can help families continue enjoying backyard cookouts this summer without breaking their budgets.
