Coast-to-coast storm systems could disrupt Thanksgiving travel plans for millions of Americans this week, forecasters say.

Nearly 82 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving this year — a 2% increase from last year’s record of 80.2 million, according to AAA projections.

Most of those travelers, about 73.3 million, will reach their Thanksgiving destinations by car, while around 6 million are expected to fly. AAA says Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons will likely be the busiest times on the roads.

Below is what travelers across the country can expect:

Monday

Rain — some of it heavy — is expected across much of the central U.S., from Texas and Louisiana to the upper Mississippi Valley, with localized flooding possible.

According to AccuWeather, “the heaviest rainfall is forecast to focus along the Interstate 30 corridor stretching from Dallas northeastward to Little Rock, Arkansas.” Gusty thunderstorms could cause delays on the roads and potentially disrupt flight operations in Austin, Dallas and Little Rock.

A separate storm system is expected to bring significant snowfall to the northern Plains starting Monday afternoon.

Tuesday

Showers and thunderstorms will spread into the Mississippi Valley, with widespread rainfall moving into the Midwest and Ohio Valley, according to AccuWeather’s latest forecast.

Wind-driven snow will continue across the northern Plains. The Dakotas, northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and parts of Michigan will see the highest accumulations.

Another storm system may bring rain and mountain snow to the Northwest.

Wednesday

Colder air from Canada is forecast to drop into the central U.S., bringing accumulating snow to the northwestern Rockies and a mix of rain and snow to the Midwest. Major cities such as Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland could experience weather-related delays on Thanksgiving Eve.

AccuWeather warns that, in addition to the wintry mix, strong winds could create dangerous travel conditions, especially on high bridges and at airports in the Great Lakes region.

Meanwhile, an atmospheric river is expected to deliver abundant moisture to the Pacific Northwest, increasing the risk of flooding and travel disruptions in western Washington and northwestern Oregon.

Thursday — Thanksgiving Day

It will be windy and cold across the Northeast, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

Heavy lake-effect snow bands, accompanied by powerful winds, could cause localized whiteout conditions near the Great Lakes.

According to AccuWeather, “several inches of snow could impact travel across portions of major interstates 81, 90 and 196 within the most persistent snow bands.” These snow showers can quickly reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions, with temperatures likely reaching only the 20s and 30s Fahrenheit.

In the West, snow is expected across the northern Rockies and High Plains.
