The actor appeared in 10 seasons of the ABC medical drama, portraying plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan — widely known to fans as “McSteamy.” He played the role from seasons two through nine, where the character ultimately died, and later returned for a cameo appearance in season 17.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on behalf of Shondaland, saying, “Eric Dane was a beloved member of the Shondaland and Grey’s Anatomy families. He was a truly gifted actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan left a lasting impact on the series and audiences worldwide.”

She added, “We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship and humanity he shared with us over so many years. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones and everyone touched by his work.”

ABC and 20th Television also issued a joint statement expressing sadness over Dane’s passing, praising his talent and memorable presence on the show, and noting that his courage during his battle with ALS inspired many.

Several cast members shared tributes on social media. Kevin McKidd, who plays Dr. Owen Hunt, posted a brief message honoring his colleague, while longtime cast member James Pickens Jr. also expressed his condolences.

Producer Krista Vernoff recalled inviting Dane back for his 2021 cameo during the pandemic, saying he immediately agreed and brought warmth and humor to the set. She wrote that she would especially remember his hugs and friendship.

Actress Kim Raver described Dane as a bright presence on and off set, highlighting his playful personality and impeccable comedic timing. Sarah Drew also shared a tribute, calling him both an extraordinary actor and person, and offered sympathy to his family.

Together, the tributes reflected how deeply respected and admired Dane was by his colleagues and the lasting impression he left on the series and its community.
