AUSTIN — Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement Sunday following the deadly attack that unfolded overnight in downtown Austin.
According to officials, three people were killed and 14 others injured in a mass shooting outside Buford’s bar on West 6th Street. Police fatally shot the suspect at the scene.
The FBI said it is too early to determine a motive. However, investigators noted that evidence connected to the suspect and his vehicle suggests there may be a potential link to terrorism.
“Texas grieves alongside the families and loved ones of those who were senselessly killed in last night’s attack in Austin,” Governor Abbott said. “Cecilia and I are praying for the victims and for the swift recovery of those who were injured. I have spoken with Mayor Watson and DPS Director Martin and have offered the full support of the State of Texas to ensure every available resource is mobilized.”
Abbott emphasized that the violence would not weaken the state’s resolve.
“This horrific act will not define us, nor will it intimidate Texans,” he said. “To anyone who would seek to exploit tensions abroad to threaten our communities or critical infrastructure, let this be clear: Texas will respond swiftly and decisively to protect our people.”
The governor announced that he has directed the Texas Military Department to activate personnel under Operation Fury Shield to assist state and federal partners in safeguarding communities and infrastructure. Security has been heightened at major energy facilities, ports and along the Texas border. Cybersecurity teams have been reinforced, and unmanned aerial systems have been deployed to monitor sensitive sites.
Abbott also ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to increase patrols and surveillance efforts statewide. In Austin specifically, DPS will expand law enforcement presence in the 6th Street entertainment district on weekends to deter further criminal activity.
“Texas is working tirelessly with our federal partners to ensure that every necessary measure is taken to defend our communities,” Abbott said.
