Google Android Users Could Receive Payments From $135 Million Data Privacy Settlement

Millions of Android users across the United States could soon qualify for compensation under a proposed $135 million settlement involving allegations that Google improperly collected user data through Android devices without clear consent.
The class-action lawsuit claims Google secretly programmed Android phones to continuously transmit user information using customers’ cellular data plans, even when users attempted to limit tracking by disabling location services or closing applications. According to court filings, the alleged data collection began in 2017 and occurred without an option for users to fully opt out.
Although Google denied any wrongdoing and no court ruling determined the company violated the law, the tech giant agreed to settle the case to resolve the dispute. The settlement has already received preliminary court approval, with a final approval hearing currently scheduled for June 23.
As part of the agreement, Google also committed to making changes to how Android devices handle user consent and data disclosures. The company is expected to provide clearer explanations about data collection practices, offer additional privacy controls, and improve transparency for Android users when setting up new devices.
A spokesperson for Google said the lawsuit mischaracterized “standard industry practices” designed to keep Android devices secure, while emphasizing that the settlement allows the company to move forward and provide users with more information about how its services operate.
Eligible users may include individuals in the United States or its territories who used an Android phone with a cellular data plan at any point between Nov. 12, 2017, and the date of the settlement’s final approval. However, California residents involved in a separate but related lawsuit known as Csupo v. Google LLC are not eligible to participate in both settlements.
While exact payment amounts have not yet been finalized, settlement payouts are expected to be capped at $100 per person after attorneys’ fees and administrative costs are deducted. Users who qualify must still provide payment information through the official settlement website in order to receive compensation.
Anyone wishing to opt out of the settlement and retain the right to pursue separate legal action against Google must do so before the established deadline.
The lawsuit is one of several recent privacy-related legal challenges involving Google and broader concerns about how large technology companies collect, use, and monetize consumer data.
