Golden Globes 83rd Nominations: Highlights, Surprises, and Snubs
The 83rd Golden Globes nominations were revealed Monday morning, with One Battle After Another leading the pack with nine nods. Here’s a look at some of the most notable takeaways from this year’s slate.
A ‘Wicked’ Snub
Initially, Wicked: For Good seemed poised for a strong showing. The sequel received nominations for both of its original songs and nods for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. But the film faced a major disappointment: it did not receive a nomination for Best Comedy or Musical, a category the original Wicked had easily secured. While reviews for the sequel were slightly less enthusiastic, few expected such a high-profile miss. It seems the Globes were not in a musical mood this year — The Testament of Ann Lee was overlooked not only for Best Musical but also in song and score categories, earning only a nomination for lead actress Amanda Seyfried.
Have the Globes Matured?
Traditionally known for eyebrow-raising choices, the Golden Globes have become noticeably more conventional after diversifying their voting membership following past scandals. This year’s nominees largely reflect industry expectations, with fewer celebrity-driven surprises. Longtime observers might be surprised that a headline-making contender like Sydney Sweeney (Christy) was passed over in favor of the lesser-known Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby). Still, a hint of classic Globes unpredictability remained in at least one category.
Questionable Box Office Nod
The Golden Globe for “cinematic and box office achievement” has always been somewhat contentious, designed to recognize commercial hits that might otherwise be overlooked. Yet it was surprising to see a well-received blockbuster like Superman omitted in favor of Avatar: Fire and Ash — which has yet to release and earn revenue — and Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, which only had a limited theatrical run. With ongoing discussions about Netflix’s future in theaters, however, any recognition encouraging theatrical releases may be strategic.
Richard Linklater’s Double Feature
Richard Linklater scored two nominations this year. Nouvelle Vague, a breezy French-language comedy about the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, seemed poised for Oscar contention before France passed on it as its international-film submission. Surprisingly, it reappeared in the Globes race for Best Musical or Comedy alongside Linklater’s other film, Blue Moon, starring Ethan Hawke — a rare double nod reminiscent of a “Soderbergh-style” sweep.
Underperforming Contenders
Linklater’s dual nominations edged out Netflix’s Jay Kelly, which failed to secure a Best Comedy slot despite recognition for George Clooney and Adam Sandler. Meanwhile, Marty Supreme did make the Best Comedy or Musical category and earned nominations for screenplay and lead actor Timothée Chalamet, but director Josh Safdie and supporting actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Odessa A’zion were left out. Can a Christmas Day release gain momentum before the Oscars?
A Right-Wing Clash Avoided
The introduction of a podcast award this year sparked questions about the Globes branching into a new medium. October’s long list included both entertainment-focused podcasts like Amy Poehler’s Good Hang and politically charged shows hosted by Ben Shapiro, Megyn Kelly, and Tucker Carlson. Ultimately, none of the political figures were nominated, allowing Poehler and SmartLess to avoid awkward encounters at the January 11 ceremony.
