New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a dislocated ankle during Sunday’s Week 8 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team confirmed. He was carted off the field with an air cast on his left leg and later taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. The injury occurred with 8:07 remaining in the first half when Skattebo was rolled up on during a tackle.
The setback is a crushing blow to what had been a sensational rookie campaign for the Arizona State standout. Skattebo quickly became a bright spot in New York’s offense, forming a dynamic duo with fellow rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who took over the starting job earlier this season.
Before exiting, Skattebo logged three carries for 12 yards and caught an 18-yard touchdown pass. With him sidelined, Tyrone Tracy Jr. is expected to reclaim the starting running back role he held at the start of the year.
Through the first seven games of his NFL career, Skattebo amassed 398 rushing yards and five touchdowns, along with 189 receiving yards and another score. His breakout performance included a three-touchdown showing against Philadelphia on Oct. 9, cementing him as one of the Giants’ most dangerous offensive weapons.
Skattebo had also emerged as a legitimate contender for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, entering Week 8 with the seventh-best odds (+3000, per FanDuel). Unfortunately, the injury will likely derail those aspirations.
His electric debut season has been part of a standout year for rookies across the league. Skattebo led all first-year players with 587 total yards from scrimmage through seven games and was one of only three rookies to surpass the 500-yard mark — a sharp increase from last season, when only one rookie hit that milestone by Week 7.
A fourth-round pick, Skattebo is already being hailed as one of the biggest steals of the 2025 NFL Draft. His all-around playmaking ability was evident long before he turned pro — he finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting at Arizona State last year, just two seasons removed from earning FCS All-American honors at Sacramento State.
