Germany Opens World Cup Campaign in Dominant Fashion With Convincing Victory Over Curaçao
HOUSTON — Germany began its 2026 World Cup journey with an impressive display of attacking football, defeating Curaçao 7-1 on Sunday in its opening Group E match.
Led by a brilliant two-goal performance from Kai Havertz, the four-time world champions showcased their offensive firepower while sending a strong message to the rest of the tournament field.
Germany struck first in the sixth minute when Felix Nmecha finished a precise setup from Florian Wirtz to give his team an early advantage. Curaçao, however, refused to back down. In the 21st minute, Livano Comenencia scored the nation's first-ever World Cup goal, sending the Caribbean supporters in attendance into celebration as the match was leveled at 1-1.
The historic moment energized Curaçao, but Germany quickly regained control.
Defender Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead in the 38th minute with a powerful header from a Nathaniel Brown corner kick. Just before halftime, Havertz converted a penalty after Nmecha was fouled inside the area, giving Germany a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the break.
The second half belonged entirely to the Germans.
Only minutes after the restart, Jamal Musiala extended the lead with a composed finish. Brown added his own goal in the 68th minute before Deniz Undav found the net ten minutes later, capping another impressive attacking sequence.
Havertz completed his brace in the closing moments of the match, sealing a comprehensive 7-1 victory and putting Germany atop the Group E standings.
The result represents an encouraging start for a German squad eager to reestablish itself among the world's elite after disappointing group-stage exits in both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. With a balanced mix of experienced veterans and rising young stars, Germany appears determined to mount a serious challenge for another world title.
The match also marked a historic occasion for Curaçao, which became the smallest nation ever to compete in a FIFA World Cup. Despite the result, the team's first goal on soccer's biggest stage will remain a proud milestone in the country's sporting history.
A crowd of more than 68,000 fans filled Houston Stadium, with the majority supporting Germany, while Curaçao's passionate supporters created memorable moments throughout the match.
Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who returned from international retirement for the tournament, made his first World Cup appearance in nearly two years and contributed to the victory with a steady performance.
The game also featured a unique coaching matchup. Curaçao's 78-year-old manager Dick Advocaat became the oldest coach in World Cup history, while Germany's Julian Nagelsmann entered the tournament as its youngest manager at age 38.
Germany will next face Ivory Coast in Toronto, while Curaçao will look to rebound against Ecuador in Kansas City as the group stage continues.
