Gatorade Recalls Thousands of Sports Drink Cases Over Undeclared Food Coloring

Gatorade has announced a recall affecting thousands of cases of several sports drink products after discovering that certain bottles were distributed without properly listing food color additives on their labels.

The recall includes 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange, and Gatorade Orange Zero with expiration dates ranging from April through June 2027.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the affected products may contain Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, or both, but these ingredients were omitted from the packaging.

Although allergic reactions to these food dyes are uncommon, some individuals—particularly those sensitive to Yellow No. 5—may experience symptoms such as itching or hives. The concern prompting the recall is the absence of this information on product labels, which could affect consumers with known sensitivities.

The FDA has classified the action as a Class II recall, indicating that exposure to the affected products could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, while the risk of serious health consequences is considered low.

States Affected

The recalled products were distributed across more than 30 states, including:

Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.
