The FBI announced Thursday that it is offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Monica Witt, a former U.S. Air Force intelligence specialist accused of spying for Iran.
Witt was indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., in 2019 on espionage-related charges, including allegedly providing classified national defense information to the Iranian government.
According to the FBI Washington Field Office, Witt served as an active-duty Air Force intelligence specialist and later worked as a special agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations between 1997 and 2008. She later continued working as a U.S. government contractor until 2010.
Authorities say her military and government positions gave her access to highly sensitive classified information, including the identities of undercover U.S. intelligence personnel.
Federal officials allege that Witt defected to Iran in 2013 and began cooperating with the Iranian government, exposing classified U.S. defense programs and potentially placing American intelligence operations at risk.
Investigators claim she knowingly shared information that endangered U.S. personnel and their families overseas. Prosecutors also allege that Witt assisted the Iranian regime by researching and identifying former U.S. colleagues who could later become targets of surveillance or cyber operations.
The FBI said Witt’s actions allegedly benefited Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an organization involved in intelligence gathering, unconventional warfare, and support for terrorist groups hostile to U.S. interests.
Although she has been formally charged, Witt remains a fugitive and is believed to be living in Iran. Officials say she speaks Farsi and may be using aliases, including Fatemah Zahra and Narges Witt.
“Monica Witt allegedly betrayed her oath to the Constitution by defecting to Iran and providing the regime with sensitive national defense information,” said Daniel Wierzbicki, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterintelligence and Cyber Division.
Wierzbicki added that investigators believe someone may have information about Witt’s whereabouts and urged the public to come forward.
The FBI said it continues to actively pursue leads in the case and encouraged anyone with information to contact the agency through its tip line, local FBI offices, or the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
