Friday Foursomes

Session: Europe 3 – 1 USA

  • Rahm / Hatton (EUR) def. DeChambeau / Thomas, 4&3

  • Åberg / Fitzpatrick (EUR) def. Scheffler / Henley, 5&3

  • McIlroy / Fleetwood (EUR) def. Morikawa / English, 5&4

  • Schauffele / Cantlay (USA) def. MacIntyre / Hovland, 2UP

Cantlay and Schauffele stood out as the lone U.S. bright spot. After leading by three through 11 holes, the Americans lost ground as the Europeans fought back. Hovland made clutch putts on 12, 13, and 15 before mistakes on 17 allowed Schauffele and Cantlay to regain control and seal the win.

U.S. captain Keegan Bradley opened with Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, hoping for a spark. Despite an early birdie, they were no match for Rahm and Hatton, who birdied five holes after the sixth to win 4&3.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood rolled past Harris English and Collin Morikawa, 5&4. Both Rahm and Fleetwood extended their Ryder Cup foursomes records to 5-0, among the best European starts ever.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley struggled as well, losing 5&3 to Åberg and Fitzpatrick. Scheffler, now 0-3 in his last three foursomes, admitted putting woes cost them chances.

"Russ and I had some good shots, but we didn’t hole enough putts," Scheffler said. "They played a great round. We’ll regroup this afternoon."

According to Elias Sports Bureau, world No. 1 players are now just 10-11-1 in Ryder Cup foursomes.
