As expected, Emmy voters showered love on the so-called “Big Four” of comedy — “Hacks,” “The Bear,” “Abbott Elementary,” and “Only Murders in the Building.” In the drama categories, many competitors were likely relieved that the Emmy-dominating “Shogun” is between seasons.
Emmy voters tend to stick to tradition, but there were some positive surprises this time around, such as Kathy Bates from “Matlock” becoming the oldest nominee ever in the lead drama actress category at age 77. Also, “Severance,” which last year only won for score and title design, looks stronger heading into its second season.
Highlights, surprises, and controversies from the Emmy nominations:
The growing success of “Shrinking”
The Apple TV+ comedy about a group of funny, complex therapists received little attention last year with just two nominations, but this year it earned seven nods, including best comedy. Nominees include Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, and Harrison Ford, who earned his first Emmy nomination.
The fallout from an act of violence
The British Netflix series “Adolescence,” which follows the emotional aftermath of a teenage stabbing, became a sensation and received 13 Emmy nominations. Owen Cooper, who plays the young attacker, became the youngest nominee ever in the supporting actor category for limited series or TV movie. Stephen Graham, co-creator and actor in the series, was also nominated.
Late night door remains closed
Traditional shows like “The Daily Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” dominated the outstanding talk series category, dashing hopes that newcomers would break through. New shows like Netflix’s “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” and the popular YouTube series “Hot Ones” were left out.
