MADRID — The Miami Dolphins edged the Washington Commanders in overtime on Sunday, securing a victory in the first NFL regular-season game ever played in Spain and carrying the momentum from last week's win over Buffalo.

Jack Jones intercepted Marcus Mariota on the first offensive play of overtime, and Riley Patterson hit a 29-yard field goal to seal the Dolphins’ 16–13 win at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

The Commanders (3–8) still had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but Matt Gay’s 56-yard field goal attempt with 15 seconds remaining sailed wide right.

The Dolphins (4–7) were stopped twice on fourth-and-goal, including one attempt in the final minutes after recovering a muffed punt by the Commanders — a mistake that came right after Washington also failed on a fourth-and-goal attempt of its own.

This was the seventh — and final — international game of the season, the most ever in a single year, as the NFL continues expanding its global footprint.

The matchup in Madrid featured halftime performances by Puerto Rican superstar Daddy Yankee and Argentine producer Bizarrap, entertaining a crowd of 78,610 at the Bernabéu.

Mariota briefly left the game late in the third quarter for a concussion evaluation after landing awkwardly while throwing the ball away in his own end zone. After clearing the protocol, he returned to the field.

Without injured quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders suffered their sixth straight loss, following a 44–22 defeat to the Detroit Lions the previous week. The Dolphins, meanwhile, came in fresh off a commanding 30–13 victory over the Bills.

“It was a great team win,” Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. “A win is always big, and we’re going to carry this momentum into our bye week and hopefully into our next game.”

Tagovailoa went 14 of 20 for 171 passing yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Mariota finished 20 of 30 for 213 yards, one touchdown and the overtime interception. He also rushed for 49 yards, including a 44-yard run shortly after returning from concussion evaluation.

Chris Rodriguez rushed for 49 yards for Washington, while Deebo Samuel recorded 74 receiving yards. De’Von Achane shined again for the Dolphins with 120 rushing yards on 21 carries, plus 45 yards on five receptions.

After both teams exchanged field goals in the first half, the Commanders opened the third quarter with a strong drive and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 20-yard reception by Samuel, who capitalized on solid blocking after a screen pass from Mariota.

The Dolphins answered quickly, driving to Washington’s 2-yard line, but came up empty on fourth down after Tagovailoa’s incomplete pass to Jaylen Waddle.

On Washington’s next drive — the same one during which Mariota was injured — Miami regained possession and capped its own series with a 1-yard touchdown run by Ollie Gordon.

Cleared to return, Mariota led the Commanders all the way to the 1-yard line, helped by a 44-yard burst down the right side. But Washington squandered the opportunity when a pass fell incomplete on fourth-and-goal after tight end Zach Ertz tripped near the end of his route.

The Dolphins were forced to punt on their next possession, but Mike Sainristil muffed the catch and Ethan Bonner recovered for Miami at the Commanders’ 42-yard line. After Achane was stopped at the 1 on third down — and briefly injured, though able to walk off on his own — coach Mike McDaniel went for it on fourth down, but Gordon was denied again.

With 1:41 left on the clock, Washington took over at its own 3-yard line. Mariota drove the team into field goal range, but Gay was unable to convert what likely would have been the game-winner.
