Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia shares heartbreaking loss of infant daughter
Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia announced on Friday the devastating loss of his infant daughter, following his absence from the 2025 World Series.
Vesia had previously been ruled out of the series due to what was described as a “deeply personal family matter.” In an emotional Instagram post, he revealed that his daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia, passed away on October 26, between Games 2 and 3.
“Our beautiful daughter went to heaven Sunday, October 26. There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through, but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her,” Vesia wrote.
The Dodgers organization had been aware of the situation and respected the family’s privacy during the postseason. Teammate Will Klein, who became a Game 3 hero, said at the time:
“I’d like to let them speak about it when they want to, but we’re keeping them in our thoughts and prayers. There are bigger things than baseball. He’s in all of our hearts.”
Both the Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays paid tribute to Vesia by inscribing his No. 51 on their caps. The Dodgers bullpen took the field wearing the tribute in Game 3, with the Blue Jays relievers joining them during Game 6.
Since joining Los Angeles in a 2021 trade from the Miami Marlins, Vesia has become one of the team’s most respected and beloved players. He was expected to play a major role in the World Series before the unimaginable tragedy struck.
In his heartfelt message, Vesia and his wife Kayla expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received:
“Thank you to the Dodgers for their understanding and support during this time. Our baseball family showed up for us, and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them.
Thank you, Dodger Nation, Blue Jays organization, and all baseball fans for your love and support. We’ve seen all your messages, comments, and posts — they’ve brought us so much comfort.
Lastly, we’d like to thank Cedars-Sinai and all the medical staff who helped Kayla and Sterling. Every person we came across was truly incredible.”
The message was signed simply:
With love,
The Vesias.
