Cynthia Erivo had a tense moment with an audience member during a live performance of Dracula in London’s West End on Monday, April 27.

The 39-year-old actress briefly broke character during a monologue after noticing someone in the crowd recording the show — a violation of theater rules. According to an eyewitness, the interruption came suddenly. “One moment everyone was completely absorbed in the scene, and the next she looked into the audience and asked, ‘Are you filming this?’” the attendee recalled.

At first, some audience members thought the moment might be part of the performance, but it quickly became clear Erivo was genuinely upset. The person filming reportedly apologized, prompting Erivo to respond sharply before leaving the stage.

The performance was paused as theater staff addressed the situation. Ushers removed the individual from the venue, drawing applause from the audience. After a brief delay of about 10 minutes, an announcement reminded attendees that recording was strictly prohibited. Erivo then returned to the stage and resumed the show from where she had left off, receiving a warm reception from the crowd.

Several attendees later discussed the incident online, describing it as both surprising and intense. While some praised Erivo for standing her ground, others noted that handling such disruptions can be challenging and not typically expected of performers.

This is not the first time Erivo has paused a performance of Dracula. During an earlier preview, she reportedly stopped the show shortly after it began due to line mistakes, choosing to restart the performance from the beginning — a decision that left audiences stunned but impressed by her professionalism.

Despite the interruptions, Erivo’s dedication to maintaining the integrity of the performance has been evident, reinforcing both her commitment to her craft and to the live theater experience.
