FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have released two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs with one game remaining in the regular season.

Diggs, 27, will pass through waivers and become a free agent if he is not claimed. The Cowboys conclude their season Sunday against the New York Giants.

The move brings an end to a turbulent two-year stretch in which Diggs and the organization gradually drifted apart. One source described the decision as “a culmination of factors, including performance.”

Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension in 2023 but appeared in only 21 games over the last two seasons due to multiple knee injuries. He tore the ACL in his left knee during a 2023 practice, then missed six games last year after undergoing a chondral graft procedure on the same knee. This season, he missed eight games with a right knee issue and also suffered a concussion at home while attempting to install a television mount.

If a team claims Diggs off waivers, it will assume the $472,000 salary he is owed for Week 18 plus an additional $58,823 if he is active, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. There is no guaranteed money remaining on his contract beyond this season.

The Cowboys were reportedly dissatisfied with Diggs’ approach to rehab in each of the past two years. The club enforced a $500,000 salary de-escalator for 2025 after he failed to participate in at least 84% of the voluntary offseason program, instead rehabbing in South Florida rather than under team supervision.

Diggs began this season on the physically unable to perform list but was activated in time for Week 1. He also met with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to request more man-to-man coverage.

In eight games this season, Diggs recorded 27 tackles, one tackle for loss and two quarterback pressures but failed to register an interception or pass breakup — a stark contrast from previous years. He had recorded at least one interception in each of his first five NFL seasons, including 11 in 2021, tying a franchise record and earning first-team All-Pro honors.

A second-round pick in 2020, Diggs made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2022. He was already considered a likely offseason release candidate, a move that would have freed approximately $12 million in cap space.

The Cowboys recently placed fellow Pro Bowl cornerback DaRon Bland on injured reserve with a foot injury. The current cornerback group includes rookies Shavon Revel and Trikweze Bridges, along with Caelen Carson, Reddy Steward and Corey Ballentine. Zion Childress remains on the practice squad.
