Chelsea survived a dramatic FA Cup clash against second-tier Wrexham on Saturday, March 7, rallying late before securing a 4–2 victory in extra time to advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals.
Wrexham struck first in the 18th minute, when Sam Smith found the net to give the underdogs an early lead. Chelsea responded just before halftime, leveling the match in the 40th minute after a ball deflected off goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo for an own goal.
The match intensified late in regulation. Callum Doyle restored Wrexham’s advantage in the 78th minute, sparking hopes of a major FA Cup upset. However, Chelsea answered quickly, with Josh Acheampong scoring just minutes later to tie the match 2–2.
Moments before extra time began, Wrexham’s George Dobson received a red card following a VAR review, leaving the Welsh side with ten players and shifting momentum in Chelsea’s favor.
Chelsea capitalized early in extra time when Alejandro Garnacho slipped behind the defense and scored in the 96th minute to give the London club a 3–2 lead.
Wrexham appeared to have found a dramatic equalizer in the 114th minute through Lewis Brunt, but the goal was ruled offside after a VAR review.
As Wrexham pushed forward in search of another chance, João Pedro sealed the result with a late goal in the 125th minute, securing Chelsea’s place in the next round.
The FA Cup quarterfinal draw is scheduled for Monday, March 9.
