Fever Dominates Aces Again as Caitlin Clark Returns to Help Indiana Cruise to Victory
The Indiana Fever continued its impressive run by defeating the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces for the second time in just eight days, rolling to a convincing 109-75 victory on Sunday in Las Vegas.
The win marked Indiana's eighth 100-point performance of the season, the most by any team in the WNBA, and completed another statement victory over one of the league's top contenders.
The Fever had already beaten the Aces 84-68 on July 5, although neither Caitlin Clark nor A'ja Wilson played in that contest due to injuries. Both stars returned to the lineup for Sunday's rematch.
Clark Continues Her Return
After missing two games because of recurring back discomfort that resurfaced in late June, Clark continued her gradual return to action.
The rookie played only 16 minutes in Wednesday's loss to the Los Angeles Sparks before sitting out the following game in Phoenix to avoid playing on consecutive days.
Against Las Vegas, Clark logged 24 minutes, finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, close to the workload she had targeted before the game.
Mitchell Stays Red Hot
Guard Kelsey Mitchell once again led Indiana's offense, scoring 27 points for her sixth consecutive game with at least 25 points.
Aliyah Boston added another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Sophie Cunningham provided a huge boost from long range, knocking down six of her seven three-point attempts to finish with 20 points.
As a team, Indiana shot an outstanding 56% from the field, connected on 15 three-pointers, and converted 18 of 19 free throws, displaying one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season.
The victory improved the Fever's record to 14-9 after a successful 3-1 West Coast road trip. Indiana will now return home for four consecutive games before the WNBA All-Star break, beginning Wednesday against the Golden State Valkyries.
Coach Praises Team's Growth
Head coach Stephanie White praised her team's discipline and consistency following another dominant performance.
"I thought our team played with tremendous toughness," White said. "We're continuing to build consistency in the way we compete. We won't always shoot the ball this well, but I loved how we consistently found the best shot available."
The 34-point victory also matched the largest winning margin ever recorded by the Fever against the Aces franchise, dating back to 2003 when the organization was known as the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Aces Struggle Despite Wilson's Return
Las Vegas entered the game on a demanding stretch of three contests in four days after victories over Portland and Phoenix.
Although guard Dana Evans made her season debut after recovering from a leg injury, contributing eight points off the bench, the Aces never found their rhythm.
The loss came just days after A'ja Wilson returned from her own injury absence. Wilson recorded 20 points and 12 rebounds, but acknowledged that her team failed to perform at its usual standard.
"We got our butts kicked tonight," Wilson admitted. "We simply weren't ourselves. We hold ourselves to a championship standard, and today we didn't meet it. This game is a reminder that we have to be better every single night."
Head coach Becky Hammon pointed to the demanding schedule as a possible factor but refused to use fatigue as an excuse.
"Maybe we just didn't have enough energy today," Hammon said. "Every team faces difficult stretches during a season, and this was one of ours."
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the swing from Saturday's 106-58 victory over Phoenix to Sunday's 109-75 defeat represented the largest point differential from one game to the next in WNBA history.
With several days before their next game on July 20, the Aces will have an opportunity to regroup, while the Fever heads home with growing confidence and momentum as one of the league's hottest teams.
