BMW's Next-Generation X5 Blends Heritage-Inspired Design With Advanced Technology

BMW has unveiled the next generation of its popular X5, introducing a bold redesign that combines elements of the brand's historic motorsport heritage with its latest "Neue Classe " design philosophy and cutting-edge technology.

One of the most eye-catching features is the SUV's distinctive front-end styling. Its new X-shaped LED daytime running lights create a striking visual signature that some enthusiasts say resembles the protective tape once placed over race car headlights during the 1950s and 1960s to prevent shattered glass from scattering across racetracks after accidents.

The updated X5 adopts many of the styling cues first introduced on BMW's new generation of electric vehicles. While the futuristic look gives the SUV a more modern identity, its larger proportions create a different visual impression compared to the smaller Neue Klasse models. Redesigned wheel arches, a more sculpted front fascia and an enlarged kidney grille contribute to a bolder appearance that is likely to generate plenty of discussion among BMW fans.

Another notable design change is the elimination of traditional exterior door handles. Instead, each door features a slim electronic release integrated into the bodywork, a solution intended to improve aerodynamics while giving the vehicle a cleaner, more contemporary look.

BMW is also offering optional automatic soft-closing doors, a premium feature previously associated with luxury models from Rolls-Royce that gently pulls each door shut after it has been closed.

Inside, the new X5 receives one of its biggest upgrades yet, borrowing much of its cabin design from BMW's flagship 7 Series sedan. Drivers will find a large angled central touchscreen, a compact multifunction steering wheel and an advanced head-up display that projects key driving information at the base of the windshield for improved visibility.

Passengers can also enjoy an optional secondary display integrated into the dashboard, expanding access to entertainment and vehicle information while reflecting BMW's continued emphasis on digital technology throughout the cabin.

The new infotainment system builds on technology already praised in BMW's latest electric models, offering faster responses, improved usability and a more intuitive interface designed to simplify everyday driving.

Electrification plays a major role in the next-generation X5 lineup. For the first time, BMW will offer a fully electric iX5, equipped with a massive 141-kWh battery capable of delivering an estimated driving range of up to 525 miles on a full charge, depending on driving conditions and final certification.

The arrival of the iX5 further strengthens BMW's growing electric SUV portfolio and could potentially overlap with the existing BMW iX, which currently serves as the brand's flagship electric utility vehicle.

Performance remains a hallmark of the X5 range. The new X5 M60e xDrive combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with a powerful plug-in hybrid system to produce an impressive 612 horsepower. The electrified performance SUV can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds while offering up to 63 miles of all-electric driving before the gasoline engine is required.

Despite its expanding electric lineup, BMW has not abandoned diesel power. Several international markets, including the United Kingdom, will continue to receive a 313-horsepower turbo-diesel version, providing strong performance alongside an estimated fuel economy of approximately 40 miles per gallon.

The new X5 also benefits from an extensive list of advanced driver assistance technologies. Available features include adaptive air suspension with adjustable ride height, rear-wheel steering for enhanced maneuverability, and Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance capable of maintaining speed, steering, and even performing assisted lane changes on approved highways.

With a redesigned exterior, a luxury-focused interior, expanded electrification and the latest generation of driving technology, BMW aims to ensure the X5 remains one of the benchmark premium SUVs in an increasingly competitive global market.
