Bills vs. Patriots, Week 5: Second half kicks off after one of the ugliest first halves of football in years

A Nightmare First Half for the Bills
That was an absolutely dreadful first half of football for the Buffalo Bills. The team looked sloppy, unfocused, and completely out of rhythm. Honestly, until proven otherwise, it’s hard not to think that Stefon Diggs’ absence — or presence in everyone’s minds — is affecting this locker room. We saw something similar back in 2024, during that road disaster against the Houston Texans.
Three points. Just three. And somehow, they’re lucky to be trailing only 6–3. Credit for that goes entirely to the defense, which has been holding this thing together by sheer will. Defensive end Greg Rousseau came out swinging on the first drive — but from there, the refs seemed determined to insert themselves into the game early and often.
Are you fed up with this officiating crew yet, Bills Mafia? Sure, penalties are part of football — when they’re fair and consistent. But tonight’s flags have been excessive and momentum-killing. We’ll reserve final judgment until the postgame breakdown, but so far, it’s been frustrating to watch.
Now, let’s talk about the offense.
Because, honestly — this is unacceptable football. The play-calling has been unnecessarily complicated, especially deep in their own territory. Add in the pre-snap penalties — which everyone knows Hoculi’s crew loves to call — and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
It’s been an ugly, aggravating half. But if there’s a silver lining, it’s the defense — arguably playing its best football of the young season. If Buffalo is going to extend its streak of 30-plus point games, it may need some serious help from the defense or special teams. Otherwise, this could be remembered alongside the infamous “Browns punt game” for all the wrong reasons.
Josh Allen hasn’t been terrible, but he’s getting minimal support outside of Dalton Kincaid. The last time the Bills turned the ball over this much in a first half? Ten years ago.
Bills vs. Patriots – Week 5 Halftime Stats
Here’s your open thread for the second half of Bills–Patriots. Let’s hope we see a different Buffalo team take the field — one that remembers who they are.
And as always: be kind to one another… and in all things — Go Bills!
