Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys’ founder and lead songwriter, has died at 82, his family confirmed on social media.
"We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father, Brian Wilson, has passed away," they wrote. "We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy as we grieve. We know we’re sharing this sorrow with the world."
Circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.
Career and Legacy
The Beach Boys began with Brian, his brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The band sold over 100 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
Key milestones:
1963: First top-10 hit, "Surfin’ U.S.A."
1965: "California Girls" and "Help Me, Rhonda" (from Summer Days).
1966: Released the groundbreaking album Pet Sounds, which Wilson called "a spiritual record—the greatest I’ll ever make."
Health Struggles
In 2024, Wilson was placed under conservatorship following a dementia diagnosis and the death of his wife, Melinda. The arrangement ensured his care and stability.
In the 1990s, he faced similar challenges under psychologist Eugene Landy, accused of overmedicating him.
In His Words
Wilson once reflected:
"I wanted to grow musically and create something people would love. And I did."
