At least one person was killed and nine others were injured after a gunman attacked a Sunday service at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan, according to police. Officers fatally shot the attacker.

Authorities identified the suspect as a 40-year-old man who first drove his vehicle through the church’s front doors in Grand Blanc Township, about 60 miles northwest of Detroit. He then opened fire with an assault rifle on the congregation of several hundred worshippers.

Police Chief William Renye said investigators believe the suspect also set fire to the building, which was soon engulfed in flames, as seen in photos and videos shared online. Officials fear more victims may be found inside due to the fire.

Renye praised the quick actions of two officers who confronted and neutralized the gunman, noting that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Several of the wounded remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences on X, saying her “heart is breaking” for the Grand Blanc community and calling violence in a place of worship “unacceptable.”

President Trump described the incident as “horrendous” on Truth Social, pledging full FBI support and suggesting it may be “another targeted attack on Christians in the United States.”

The motive for the assault has not yet been determined. Investigators are reviewing the suspect’s home and cellphone records.

Church spokesperson Doug Andersen condemned the event as a “tragic act of violence” in a statement on the church’s website.
