Although the events are unfolding in the United Kingdom, one U.S. lawmaker said they are being closely monitored in Washington.
Democratic Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, who has advocated for the release of the Epstein files, told the BBC he believes the UK is beginning to see “real accountability for people like Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.”
“In the United States, there’s a lack of accountability,” Subramanyam said. He noted that while individuals named in the Epstein files sometimes face consequences in the U.S., those repercussions often occur in the “court of public opinion” rather than through formal investigations.
The King’s brother cannot be legally compelled to testify in the United States. However, Subramanyam said Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest “should increase the pressure” for him to cooperate, adding that many questions remain unanswered.
“Our door is open and we will speak with him on his terms. I will travel to the UK if necessary,” the congressman said.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein. Being named in the Epstein files does not, by itself, imply guilt.
Timeline of events
Authorities confirmed the following sequence of developments:
Unmarked police vehicles were seen at the Sandringham Estate, where Andrew has been living.
At 10:00 GMT, the BBC reported that he had been arrested by Thames Valley Police.
Police stated that at approximately 8:00 a.m. they arrested a man in his 60s from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Officers carried out searches at the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park and at the Sandringham estate, covering locations in Berkshire and Norfolk.
Around 19:00 GMT, Andrew was photographed leaving Aylsham police station in a car. Police later confirmed he had been released under investigation and that the search in Norfolk had concluded.
Shortly afterward, he was seen returning to Sandringham.
