Young American talent Alex Michelsen continues to make his mark on home soil, this time at the Miami Open. At just 21 years old, he is showing steady growth on the tour as he pushes for a spot in the quarterfinals, where a major challenge awaits: a matchup against Jannik Sinner.

Michelsen, who has already reached three ATP finals — all in the United States — is still chasing his first tour title, a goal he describes as his biggest motivation right now.

In a recent interview, the California native opened up about his journey, his favorite tournaments, and key moments in his career. He named Tokyo as his favorite ATP stop, praising the city, the organization, and the overall experience. “It was my first time in Asia, and I thought everything was amazing,” he said.

When it comes to rivalries, Michelsen expressed admiration for the legendary battles between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer — especially the 2019 Wimbledon final, which he watched closely while recovering from an injury. As for his own rivalry, he pointed to fellow American Learner Tien, a close friend and frequent opponent since their junior days.

Among the standout moments of his career so far, Michelsen highlighted breaking into the Top 100 after winning a Challenger event in Knoxville. “Seeing myself ranked No. 99 in the world was surreal,” he recalled. Another major milestone was capturing the biggest title of his career to date on clay in Estoril.

Despite his progress, Michelsen remains focused on reaching the next level — winning his first ATP title. After falling short in three finals, he remains determined and optimistic. “Every week you think, maybe this is the one,” he said.

Off the court, his tennis career has also opened unique doors. Michelsen shared that he has attended games of the Los Angeles Clippers up close and even met Russell Westbrook, as well as watched stars like Stephen Curry in action — experiences he describes as some of the coolest of his life.

Now, with a major test ahead in Miami, Michelsen is looking to turn potential into results and take another big step toward his long-awaited breakthrough title.
