Actor Julian McMahon, known for his roles in hit TV shows like Nip/Tuck, Charmed, and FBI: Most Wanted, as well as the Fantastic Four films (2005, 2007), passed away on July 2 in Clearwater, Florida, following a private battle with cancer. He was 56 years old.
His wife, Kelly McMahon, shared a heartfelt statement with Deadline:
"With an open heart, I want to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, passed away peacefully this week after a courageous fight against cancer. Julian loved life, his family, his friends, his work, and his fans. His greatest wish was to bring joy to as many people as possible. We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in private. And we hope that all those whom Julian brought happiness to will continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories."
Born in Sydney, Australia, on July 27, 1968, McMahon was the son of former Australian Prime Minister Sir Billy McMahon (1971–1972). He began his career as a model before transitioning to acting, making his TV debut in the Australian soap opera The Power, the Passion (1989). He gained recognition in Home and Away (1990–1991) before moving to Hollywood, where he appeared in Another World (1993) and Profiler (1996–2000).
His breakout roles came as the demon Cole Turner in Charmed (2000–2003) and the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck (2003–2010), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. More recently, he led FBI: Most Wanted (2020–2022) and starred in The Surfer (2024), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
Tributes from co-stars and colleagues poured in:
Dylan Walsh (his Nip/Tuck co-star): "I’m stunned. We rode this wave together, and I loved him. My heart goes out to Kelly and Maddy. Jules, you’d want me to crack a joke… Rest in peace."
Nicolas Cage (his co-star in The Surfer): "Such deeply saddening news. Julian was one of the most talented actors and kindest people I’ve known. My love to his family."
Dick Wolf (creator of FBI): "Shocking news. Our condolences to his family."
McMahon is survived by his wife and daughter, Madison "Maddy" McMahon, leaving behind a celebrated legacy in film and television. His final role was in Netflix’s The Residence, where he played the Australian Prime Minister—a fitting return to his roots.
