According to NFL Australia and New Zealand General Manager Charlotte Offord, the 49ers are currently the most popular NFL franchise in Australia.

Much of that popularity dates back to the team's dynasty during the 1980s and 1990s, when legends like Joe Montanaand Jerry Rice helped build one of football's greatest dynasties. Those championship years introduced countless Australian fans to the NFL, creating a loyal fan base that has lasted for generations.

The demand for Thursday night's game highlights that passion.

More than 175,000 fans registered their interest in attending the historic matchup despite the Melbourne Cricket Ground seating approximately 100,000 spectators. When tickets officially went on sale, they sold out in just two hours.

Nearly half of all ticket holders traveled from overseas or other Australian states, while thousands made the long journey from the United States, many coming directly from California to support the 49ers.

United Airlines also reported a sharp increase in bookings on flights between San Francisco and Melbourne, reflecting the growing excitement surrounding the game.

A Dream Finally Comes True

For lifelong fan Huw Davies, the moment has been decades in the making.

His journey as a 49ers supporter began in 1989 after his father returned from a business trip to the United States carrying several NFL hats. Davies received a 49ers cap and instantly became a fan.

Since then, he has traveled to San Francisco multiple times to watch games, but never imagined his favorite team would one day play just a short trip from his home in Tasmania.

When the NFL announced the Melbourne game, celebration erupted inside his family's kitchen.

Now he will experience the historic event alongside his seven-year-old son, Flynn.

"It's something we've always shared," Davies said. "Watching games together has become our tradition, and now we get to see the 49ers play in Australia."

Another supporter, Harry Murtough, became a fan during Jim Harbaugh's successful years in San Francisco and has tried to attend at least one game every season. He immediately purchased tickets when the matchup was announced and will attend with his 75-year-old father.

"The fact that I can take my dad to see the team I've supported for years means everything," Murtough said. "He's not a 49ers fan yet—but after this, he probably will be."

Thursday's showdown between the 49ers and Rams represents more than just the start of a new NFL season.
