Real Madrid suffered a shocking defeat to Celta Vigo in La Liga, finishing the match with only nine players on the field and increasing the pressure on manager Xabi Alonso.
The problems for the home side began early in the second half, when Williot Swedberg — who had just come on — scored a clever back-heel finish in the 52nd minute. It was his first league goal of the season and gave Celta an unexpected lead.
Things quickly got worse for Real Madrid. In the 64th minute, Fran García received two yellow cards in less than a minute and was sent off, leaving the team down to 10 men. In stoppage time, at 90+2, Álvaro Carreras was also expelled after picking up two quick yellow cards — one for dissent and another for abusive language — reducing Real to nine players.
Immediately after the second dismissal, Swedberg struck again to make it 2–0, taking full advantage of Real Madrid’s emotional and tactical collapse.
The victory marks Celta Vigo’s first win over Real Madrid in La Liga since May 2014, ending a streak of 22 matches without beating the Merengues.
The week had already been tense for Xabi Alonso, who revealed he had spoken with club president Florentino Pérez about the team’s dip in form. The atmosphere inside the Bernabéu reflected that pressure, with Alonso even receiving a yellow card on the sideline.
Real Madrid still had chances to score — Arda Güler fired narrowly wide from close range, and Kylian Mbappé tried a chip that went just over the bar.
With the defeat, Real remain in second place, four points behind leaders Barcelona, while Celta climb to 10th.
The team also faced more injury issues: this was the first match since Trent Alexander-Arnold was ruled out for two months with a thigh injury, and defender Éder Militão was forced off in the 23rd minute with a hamstring problem, further weakening the defensive line.
Now, all attention shifts to a crucial Champions League clash on Wednesday, when Xabi Alonso’s side will host Manchester City at 20:00 GMT.
