The U.S. Department of Education has officially opened the 2027–28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) one week ahead of its traditional October 1 release date, giving students and families earlier access to federal financial aid applications.

The updated FAFSA has been redesigned with simpler language, improved navigation, and new features aimed at making the application process faster and easier. According to the Department, many applicants can now complete the form in as little as 15 minutes through FAFSA.gov.

Key Improvements to the 2027–28 FAFSA

The FAFSA remains the primary application for accessing federal grants, student loans, and work-study programs, while also serving as the basis for many state and institutional financial aid awards.

This year's application includes several enhancements:

• Simplified instructions: The form has been rewritten using clearer language and fewer technical terms to improve accessibility.

• Text message invitations: Students can now invite parents or other required contributors to complete their portions of the application via text message in addition to email.

• Quicker renewals: Returning students will soon be able to renew their FAFSA using automatically populated information from previous applications, reducing the time needed to complete the process.

• Faster FSA ID verification: New applicants can verify their Federal Student Aid (FSA) accounts more quickly, allowing them to begin the application sooner.

• Immediate eligibility results: Applicants can now view their preliminary federal student aid eligibility shortly after submitting the form, eliminating the waiting period that existed in previous years.

Why Students Should Apply Early

Education officials encourage students to submit the FAFSA as early as possible.

Although the FAFSA determines eligibility for federal aid, many state grants, scholarships, and college-based financial aid programs have limited funding that is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Filing early can improve a student's chances of receiving the maximum amount of available financial assistance.

Applicants should also pay close attention to three important deadlines:

• College deadlines: Individual colleges and universities may require FAFSA submissions by specific dates for institutional aid.

• State deadlines: Many states establish their own deadlines for grants and scholarship programs.

• Federal deadlines: The federal deadline for the 2027–28 academic year is June 30, 2028.

Earlier Release Aims to Prevent Delays

The early launch follows several years of FAFSA implementation challenges that delayed financial aid processing and college admissions timelines.

In response, the FAFSA Deadline Act, enacted in 2024, requires the Department of Education to make each new FAFSA application available by October 1 annually. This year's early release reflects the department's effort to provide students and colleges with additional time to complete the financial aid process and avoid the disruptions experienced in previous application cycles.
