Two West Virginia National Guard members were critically injured Wednesday when a gunman opened fire on them in what authorities described as a “targeted attack” near the White House.

According to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation, the suspect is believed to be from Afghanistan and to have entered the United States in 2021.

Multiple sources told ABC News that the FBI is treating the incident as a potential act of international terrorism, exploring whether the shooting may have been inspired by a foreign terrorist organization.

More details about the suspect are expected Thursday from federal and local officials, including the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C.

The victims — a woman and a man — were transported to local hospitals, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the matter. MPD Executive Assistant Chief Jeffrey Carroll said the attacker rounded a corner around 2:15 p.m., raised a firearm, and ambushed the Guard members.

“It appears to be a lone gunman who opened fire and ambushed these National Guard members,” Carroll said.

The suspect was subdued and detained by other Guard members who heard the gunshots, Carroll added. The assailant, an unidentified man, was also critically wounded.
